One study by Alero Ann Roberts reported that 66.8% of households in Lagos were between moderately and severely food insecure as at 2018. Food security amongst other things, speaks to access to food that meets dietary requirements, and the purchasing power to procure same as at when needed. Clearly, Covid-19 in 2020, the recent removal of petrol subsidy and general inflation in country have combined to exacerbate those numbers, throwing many more people into the hunger and food insecurity bracket.
Our pilot food security study is undertaken to appreciate the challenges currently faced by low income households in Orisumbare-Ayobo and Ilaje Bariga in Lagos Nigeria, with the overarching objective of designing a sustainable food security program for households within this social and economic bracket.
An interesting twist is that we will seek to deploy models that are uniquely African, and compare the impact with the typical food aid model of western paradigms.
The report will be peer reviewed and published in our journal for the benefit of the reading public. The most effective and sustainable model identified for food security for the target audience will be expanded to other communities across the continent, taking their local peculiarities into cognizance.
