This is staggering in view of the impending climate crises and underscores the huge environmental and economic risks the country faces this century.
It will take concerted, sustained efforts to reverse this trajectory and recreate a dense, evergreen forest belt in the tropical country, planting an estimated 350 million trees annually according to experts over the next 50 years.
Nigeria must declare an afforestation emergency, banning the felling of trees in the country for the next 20 years while galvanizing the entire population to plant hundreds of millions of trees yearly to avert the impending climate crises.

96%? That number is wild. It sounds inaccurate.

96% might sound wild but it is estimated by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation based on studies on the ground and they should know. Again, what has been lost due to ‘over-exploitation’ is the natural or primary forest cover in Nigeria. This does not account for regrowth or secondary forests etc. Any person(s) on the ground will appreciate the reality of the challenge this West African country faces!
